Artist's Story

“Respite” is the third in a series of watercolors that invite you to marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty of nature which has intrigued me since my childhood in an area surrounded by forests and farms. The light and the textures of this scene of old rusted scythes fascinate me. In this case, I placed two damselflies in this inviting, sunny resting spot. Even as a curious young man growing up on a North Florida farm, I always found scenes like this intriguing and visually moving. This collection of old rusted scythes and the strong shadows they cast on the crumbling walls became the inspiration for “Respite” because it took me back in time the very moment I saw it. Growing up in a rural area surrounded by forests and farms, the awe-inspiring beauty of nature became my first muse as a young artist. I was always engaged- in one way or another with the wildlife of the farm, including the many insects. In “Respite” my goal is to invite you into this world in hopes that you will begin to see the natural beauty that exists all around you in all of its many forms. The rusted scythes silhouetted against the sun-drenched wall created an inviting resting spot for a couple Damsel Flies as the hard vertical shadows move you through the composition.

Artist's Statement

I’ve known I was an artist since I was 8 years old.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art, I pursued a corporate career as a creative director for over 25 years, while continuing to paint and show my work.

Following a period of extreme illness, I received the lifesaving gift of a kidney transplant in 2022. It was truly the first day of the rest of my life. As I recovered, I was energized by the pure joy of being in the studio painting daily. My creativity and my dedication to my work elevated to new levels.
My goal is to create art that engages the viewer. Watercolor is, for me, the perfect medium to interpret and portray the sights and mood that make the story of a particular scene so compelling. Recently, I rediscovered both my early love of nature, and my passion for capturing its warmth, complexity, and abstractions through my watercolors.

I now dedicate the majority of my time to my art, in addition to teaching art at the college level, creating bonsai, gardening, and landscaping.
